More than a quarter of a million people live in the metropolitan area of Mobile, pronounced "Mo-beel." In 1702, Mobile was founded as the first capital of the Louisiana Territory. Because of its location as a port city, Mobile's history and economy has been shaped by water-born commerce. Mobile is home to the original Mardi Gras in the United States, instituted in 1704.
