LODGING IN NATCHEZ
Natchez, settled by the French in 1716, is the oldest permanent settlement on the Mississippi River. The city is characterized by beautiful historic architecture, vast plantations, and lush gardens, all adorning the banks of the Mississippi River. The city has more antebellum houses than any other place in the US; five hundred buildings are on the National Register of Historic Places.
The architectural history of the city can also be seen downtown which is filled with late nineteenth century buildings housing antique shops, hotels, bed & breakfasts, churches, and restaurants. The city is also known for the being the starting point of the The Natchez Trace Parkway, which runs 444 miles from Natchez to just south of Nashville, TN. The parkway is a scenic road which commemorates an ancient trail that connected southern portions of the Mississippi River to salt licks in central Tennessee.
